Rheumatoid Arthritis can have a very serious effect on feet, often causing the smaller joints to
become deformed which can cause excessive pressure on those joint and in severe cases causing painful nodules under the soles of the feet. It can also cause a reduction in the blood flow which can lead to ulceration in rare cases.
Good podiatry care is absolutely essential to ensure the risk to the feet is minimized. There are many things that a podiatrist can do to help including reducing callus under pressure points, cushioning the feet with special insoles or padding, footwear advice and simply providing routine maintenance which can be difficult if the hands have been effected.
In some cases the NHS Rheumatology department provide custom made shoes but these can often be improved with insoles made by a podiatrist.
The NHS Podiatry Service should provide care for those with rheumatoid arthritis but if you find it is too infrequent or inconvenient for any reason the Paulton Podiatry Clinic is able to offer an alternative service for you to try.
